SEO in 2026: What Changed and What Indian Brands Must Do

SEO & GEO 7 min read By

Key highlights

  • The biggest change in SEO is that Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer questions directly, so visibility includes being cited, not only ranking.
  • Rankings still matter, because AI answers draw heavily on pages that are already indexed and trusted.
  • Conversational, camera-led and regional language search have moved from prediction to everyday behaviour in India.
  • Brands that win in 2026 combine technical SEO, topic depth, real expertise and strong local signals.
  • Measurement has to change too: track impressions, AI citations, branded search and enquiries, not clicks alone.

A year ago, most SEO prediction lists talked about voice search, AI and zero-click results as things that were coming. In 2026 they are simply how search works. The question for Indian businesses is no longer what might happen, but what to do with what already has.

This article looks at what has genuinely changed in SEO, what has stayed the same, and a practical plan for founders and marketing heads running D2C and B2B brands in India.

What changed in SEO between 2025 and 2026

1. AI answers became the front page

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode now sit at the centre of search. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode had crossed 1 billion.

For many informational and comparison queries, the first thing a buyer reads is a summary, with a handful of cited sources. The goal of SEO has widened from “rank on page one” to “be one of the sources the answer is built from”.

2. Search spread beyond Google

Indian buyers now research on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity as well as Google. OpenAI has said India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making it the platform’s second largest market, and Airtel brought Perplexity Pro to its customers.

This is where generative engine optimisation (GEO) comes in. It is the work of making your brand easy for AI systems to find, understand and recommend. Our explainer on GEO vs SEO covers how the two fit together.

3. Zero-click moved from snippets to summaries

Featured snippets took some clicks. AI summaries take more. A Pew Research Center study of US users found they clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one.

Simple definitional content is the most affected. Pages that offer something a summary cannot, such as pricing, tools, comparisons or proof, still earn the click.

4. Voice became conversation, and the camera joined in

The old prediction was about smart speakers. What actually happened is that people now type and speak long, natural questions into AI Mode and chat tools, then ask follow-ups.

Visual search grew the same way. Google Lens and Search Live, which launched in India in October 2025, let people point their camera at a product and ask about it. For fashion, home, food and industrial products, image quality and product data now influence discovery.

5. Indian languages became a real search channel

AI Mode now works in Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Buyers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities can ask complex questions in their own language and get a full answer.

Most brands still publish only in English. That leaves room for businesses willing to create properly localised content.

6. Expertise and trust carry more weight

AI systems need sources they can rely on, and Google’s core updates, including the March 2026 core update, continue to reward content with first-hand experience and clear authorship. Generic pages built to target a keyword struggle in both classic and AI results.

7. What did not change

Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. Fast pages, clean site structure, internal links and accurate structured data still form the base of everything else.

What to do now: a practical SEO plan for 2026

Audit the technical foundation

  • Confirm key pages are indexed in Search Console and not blocked in robots.txt.
  • Fix slow mobile pages, especially on product and service templates.
  • Keep important content in HTML text rather than images, sliders or PDFs.
  • Make sure structured data (Organisation, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQ where relevant) matches what is on the page.

Rebuild content around buyer questions

Start with the questions your sales team hears every week. Group them into topics and build a hub page for each, supported by detailed articles that link to each other.

Within each page, answer the question in the first two or three sentences, then go deeper. Include specifics AI systems can quote: prices in rupees, delivery timelines, specifications, certifications and service areas.

Prove expertise on the page

  • Add named authors with real credentials, especially for health, finance, legal and technical topics.
  • Use your own data, photos, process explanations and customer examples, with permission.
  • Keep an accurate About page, team details, registered address and contact information.

Win local and regional search

For any business with a physical presence or service area, Google Business Profile is now a core SEO asset. Keep categories, services, hours and photos current, ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to them.

If a meaningful share of your buyers search in a regional language, create localised landing pages written by fluent writers. Set hreflang correctly so Google serves the right version.

Build authority beyond your own website

AI systems form a view of your brand from the wider web. Earn mentions in trade publications, industry associations, marketplaces, review sites and credible directories. Make sure your brand name, address and positioning are consistent everywhere they appear.

For manufacturers and industrial suppliers, this matters even more. Our guide to SEO for B2B manufacturers in India goes deeper.

Measure what matters now

  • Track impressions as well as clicks in Search Console; AI feature traffic is included in the Web search type.
  • Check your priority queries monthly in AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity and log whether you are cited.
  • Set up an AI referral channel in GA4 so traffic from chat tools is visible.
  • Watch branded search volume and enquiry quality as signs that AI visibility is working.

Mistakes Indian brands are still making

  • Publishing large volumes of thin, AI-written blogs. They rarely rank or get cited, and they dilute the site.
  • Measuring SEO only by sessions. A brand can be gaining visibility in AI answers while clicks stay flat.
  • Treating GEO as separate from SEO. AI answers draw on the same indexed, trusted pages, so the work overlaps heavily.
  • Neglecting Google Business Profile. Incomplete listings lose local and “near me” visibility to competitors.
  • Translating with software and calling it localisation. Regional buyers notice, and so do search systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still worth investing in for 2026?

Yes, because AI Overviews, AI Mode and tools like ChatGPT draw on pages that are indexed and trusted, so strong SEO is the foundation for visibility in both classic results and AI answers.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO focuses on ranking in search results, while GEO focuses on being understood and cited by AI systems such as Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and in practice the two share most of the same groundwork.

How can a small Indian business compete in AI search?

Focus on a narrow set of buyer questions, answer them in depth with real local detail, keep Google Business Profile complete with fresh reviews, and earn mentions from credible local and industry sources.

Should Indian brands create content in regional languages?

If a meaningful share of your customers search in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or another Indian language, well written localised pages can win visibility with less competition, especially now that AI Mode answers in these languages.
