Key highlights
- Google now answers many searches itself through AI Overviews and AI Mode, so being cited inside the answer matters as much as ranking below it.
- AI Mode is available in India in English, Hindi and seven more Indian languages, which opens real opportunities for regional content.
- Web Guide, which groups results by intent, is still an experiment, but it shows how Google wants to organise the open web.
- Google says there are no special requirements for AI features: indexable, well structured, genuinely useful pages are what get picked up.
- Indian brands should track AI visibility alongside rankings and give buyers a clear reason to click through.
When Google first tested Web Guide in 2025, it looked like one more Search Labs experiment. A year on, it is clear it was part of a bigger shift. Google Search in 2026 is built around AI answers, and the classic list of ten blue links now sits underneath them.
For Indian founders and marketing heads, the question is no longer whether this affects your traffic. It is how you stay visible when Google summarises your category before a buyer ever reaches your website.
This guide explains where AI Overviews, AI Mode and Web Guide stand today, what they change for SEO, and what to do about it.
Where Google’s AI search features stand in 2026
AI Overviews: the default answer layer
AI Overviews are the summaries that appear at the top of many results pages, with cited links underneath. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly users.
They do not appear for every search. Google shows them when its systems decide a summary adds value, which in practice means informational and comparison queries far more than branded or purely transactional ones.
AI Mode: a conversational search engine inside Google
AI Mode is a separate tab where users ask longer questions and follow up conversationally. Google reported at the same I/O that it had crossed 1 billion monthly users.
India was one of its earliest markets. Hindi support came first, and in October 2025 Google added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, alongside launching Search Live, which lets people point their camera at something and ask about it.
Ads have also arrived. Google confirmed that Search, Shopping, Performance Max and AI Max campaigns could serve ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode in India, so paid and organic visibility now meet in the same answer.
Web Guide: still an experiment, but a clear signal
Web Guide uses Gemini to split results into themed sections, each with a short summary and links. When it launched in July 2025, it was opt-in through Search Labs and limited to the Web tab.
Google later expanded the test to the All tab, and through 2026 it has kept testing similar grouped layouts with some users. It is not a standard feature for most Indian searchers yet, so treat it as a preview of direction rather than something to optimise for directly.
What actually changes for SEO
Fewer clicks for simple questions
When an answer sits on the results page, fewer people click. A Pew Research Center study of US browsing found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
Indian behaviour will not mirror the US exactly, but the direction is the same. Pages that only define terms or list basic facts are the most exposed. We cover the response in detail in our guide to zero-click search strategy for India.
Query fan-out rewards depth across a topic
Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode use query fan-out: they run several related searches across subtopics and pull supporting pages from each. Web Guide works on a similar principle.
This means one strong page is rarely enough. A brand that covers the main question plus the sub-questions buyers actually ask (cost, comparisons, use cases, regulations, delivery in their city) has more chances to be pulled into the answer.
Citations become a visibility metric
Being named as a source in an AI Overview or AI Mode response builds recognition even without a click. For B2B and considered purchases, that recognition often shows up later as branded searches, direct visits or enquiries.
How Indian brands should respond
1. Get the fundamentals right first
Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI features. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, which means it must be crawlable, fast and clear.
Check that important content is in HTML text, not locked inside images or PDFs. Make sure robots.txt is not blocking key sections, and that structured data matches what is visible on the page.
2. Write answers that can be lifted cleanly
- Open each section with a direct, two or three sentence answer, then add detail.
- Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings phrased the way people ask questions.
- Put specifics on the page: prices in rupees, timelines, service areas, specifications, certifications.
- Add a short FAQ to commercial pages, using real questions from your sales team.
3. Build topic clusters, not isolated posts
Map the questions a buyer asks from first search to purchase. Then build a hub page with supporting articles that link to each other. This mirrors how fan-out works and helps Google see you as a reliable source on the whole subject.
4. Treat regional languages as a growth channel
With AI Mode now answering in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and other Indian languages, there is less competition for well written regional content than for English. If a large share of your buyers search in a regional language, create properly localised pages, not machine translations, and set hreflang correctly.
5. Strengthen local signals
For businesses with stores, clinics, showrooms or service areas, AI answers to “near me” and city queries lean on Google Business Profile, reviews and local mentions. Keep categories, hours, photos and services current, and respond to reviews in the language customers write in.
6. Look beyond Google
Indian buyers also research on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. OpenAI has said India has 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, its second largest market. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for these systems to find, trust and cite.
Mistakes to avoid
- Chasing Web Guide as if it were live everywhere. Optimise for helpful, well organised content and you will be ready if it rolls out widely.
- Publishing thin AI-written pages at volume. They rarely earn citations and can drag down how Google assesses the whole site.
- Judging SEO on clicks alone. Track impressions, branded search growth, enquiries and AI citations together.
- Blocking Google to “protect” content. Using nosnippet or noindex keeps you out of AI answers and often out of classic results too.
- Ignoring the click-through reason. Give people something the summary cannot: calculators, pricing, case studies, samples or a quick quote.
How to measure progress
Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in Search Console’s Performance report under the Web search type, so it is not reported separately. Watch for rising impressions with flat clicks, which often signals AI answer exposure.
Alongside that, run a monthly check of your priority queries in AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity and note whether your brand is cited. In GA4, set up a channel group for AI referrals; our guide on tracking ChatGPT and AI traffic in GA4 walks through it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Web Guide available in India?
Web Guide remains a Google experiment and is not a standard feature for most Indian users in 2026, though Google has tested grouped result layouts with some searchers, so brands should focus on well organised, helpful content rather than optimising for Web Guide specifically.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are summaries shown at the top of normal Google results for some queries, while AI Mode is a separate conversational tab where users ask longer questions and follow up, and both cite websites as sources.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?
Google says no special markup or AI text files are required, and a page simply needs to be indexed, eligible for a snippet and genuinely useful, so clear structure and accurate structured data matter more than any new file.
Does AI Mode work in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes, AI Mode supports Hindi along with Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, which makes well localised regional content a practical way for Indian brands to win visibility.
