The World of information retrieval is fast changing. As a matter of fact, change is taking place every moment. The search is one of the most competitive spheres in the World of business. Three search engines dominate the search business one of which is Google with a 95% share.
Even though the search business is overwhelmingly dominated by Google one among the many could be a sleeping giant and could rise any day and capture a large part of the share. Yahoo and Bing are quite capable of challenging Google. There are more search companies that few have heard of:
- Yandex
- Baidu
- Naver
- Duck Duck Go
- Yahoo.CO.JP
- Sogou
Though most of the search engines lag behind Google some local search engines like Baidu, Yandex and Yahoo.CO.JP dominate within their countries. They could cross the boundaries and become global players in 2023 or later.
Search Engine Companies Country Wise
Naver
Naver is popular in South Korea. The local search engine started in 1999. It is more of a portal with many non-search components and functions. Unlike Google, Naver is more like a portal site with many non-search content and functions. The search results on Naver are quite unique.
Naver contains several blocks comprising shopping, news, blogs, video, images, and web pages. The website page results are not quite prominent and display Ads alongside the results. It is thus difficult to get organic traffic from Naver for overseas companies.
Yahoo.co.jp
Yahoo became a Japanese-owned company in 2018. It is still one of the popular websites in Japan. Yahoo like Naver is more of a portal site with a lot of non-search content, but its organic search results are being powered by Google. It also provides space for travel bookings, auctions, FAQs, and emails.
While the company uses its own ad services, Google has been powering its organic search results since 2010.
Baidu China
Although dominated the Chinese market once its share was recently taken over by Sogou and Microsoft Bing. Most of the users are Chinese and it is Government controlled search engine.
Yandex
Unlike Google, Yandex is a web portal and search engine. It is popular in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. Yandex provides Internet-related products and services.
Every year the search engine landscape changes but it seems Google has no competition. In time to come share percentage may change. To keep its dominating share Google must keep updating its algorithms to remain at the top. Until unless some new technological change or concept arises the status quo will remain in the search market.
