How to Approach Link Building

In search engine optimization or SEO, link building is the most important aspect of website promotion in the country. The practice is followed by most webmasters all over the World. In the initial stages search engine algorithms relied heavily on links pointing to the site to value and rank on the anchor text.

The anchor text was the chosen keyword that was planned to rank the site on the SERPs. The link building still holds value and so does the anchor text but the value has reduced and anchor text diversion is the order of the day.

Natural Linking is most preferred besides authoritative links. Normally authoritative sources of link building are those where strict editorial scrutiny is maintained along with strict guidelines for posting. Hence always read the guidelines of the source before you create a link.

Note: Links fare better whence there is content of at least 250 words. Hence the ratio of 500 words to 1 link is very good. For two links there should be at least 900 words of unique content. Two links per entry are the limit.  There should be a number of anchor texts related to the topics. Using one or very few anchor texts will invite penalization. Be careful. Before creating a link-building campaign…list a number of topic-related anchor texts which you will use whence building inbound links.

In order to build an authoritative source of links yourself in your control the blog is one of the best options. Create a blog on a specific topic and add as many anecdotal entries as you can all entries should be original.

Types of Links

Inbound or external link building is one of the key activities of search engine optimization. These links make your site authoritative along with unique content, interactive elements, good programming, and the age of the domain.

Dofollow Links:

Dofollow links are backlinks that pass ‘link juice’ and help boost the Domain Authority of the linked site or blog. This helps in better rankings on the SERPs.

Ex: <a href=”xyz.com”>anchor text</a>

Nofollow Links

Nofollow: These links don’t pass ‘link juice’ and hence don’t help in improving the Domain Authority. These links are not useful for SEO.

Ex: <a href=”xyz.com” rel=”Nofollow”>anchor text</a>

Referrals (Increasing direct traffic)

In the Internet Marketing exercise, you should also build “nofollow” links at authoritative sites for referrals. Referrals are links that users click on directly to reach your site and hence increase traffic.  You get referral benefits from “dofollow” sites as well. Hence this is an important part of search engine optimization.

Internal Linking

Internal Links are those that are embedded within the site. Here also the anchor text is used but each anchor text should be used sparingly and should be strictly related to the topic of the page. This anchor text should be from within the naturally written page content.

Internal Linking is not that important especially if you are linking your inner pages in the footer or header as the case may be. All important internal pages should be reachable within one click. In a tiered architecture, you can embed less important pages deeper.
