Social Bookmarking for Web Saturation

Why Social Bookmarking?

Social Bookmarking sites enable content creators to save, annotate, edit and share their website or web documents, articles, and blog.  The links are available to visitors usually free of charge when set as public, and out of bounds whence set to private, in both cases, the greatest benefit accrues from web saturation. Bookmarking is good for early indexing of the link, and hence the origin as well as early indexing of the web page if it is hyperlinked on the article or the blog.  Another advantage that accrues from social bookmarking is that the content is spread to many sources and can be visited by a greater number of people.

But ironically, many webmasters neglect this vital activity, and their search engine optimization campaigns lose momentum. Extensive bookmarking does lead to spamming when the links are spread widely on different sites, however, it is not advisable to post, or share on one site multiple times.

Folksonomy

Folksonomy is a classification system facilitated by tags, and hence it is also known as social tagging. Organizing shareable resources using titles, meta tags, descriptions and keywords makes it easier for web visitors to discover your content. When a group of posters share online resources, it is known as collaborative tagging or social indexing.

History and List of Bookmarking Sites

The first bookmarking site was launched in the year 1996, it was known as itList. itList was followed by WebTagger a system developed by NASA and introduced in the year 1997. By the year 2000 onwards, there were more companies that introduced bookmarking and sharing sites. The list is as follows:

  • Backflip
  • Delicious
  • Blink
  • CiteULike
  • Clip2
  • Furl
  • ClickMarks
  • HotLinks
  • Simpy
  • Faves
  • Connotea
  • Gnolia
  • Digg
  • Pinterest
  • Reddit

Some of the sites have traffic in millions.

  • Pinterest 85.5 million
  • Reddit     16.0 million
  • Stumbleupon 15 million
  • Digg 4.1 million
  • Diigo 1.2 million

As the number of sites on the Internet increased, the online sharing and linking resources increased as well and unfortunately, so did the number of spammers. But multiple sharing on the sites is prevented by most social bookmarking since it is not possible to add links more than once to an online resource. Social tagging is a community-based system and is most sought after for reading pleasure and for knowledge acquisition.
